LAHORE: TV anchor Reham Khan was on Monday served defamation notices by her former husband Ijaz Rehman, former cricketer Wasim Akram and two others, including a close aide of Pakistan Tehrik Insaf chairman Imran Khan.
According to media reports, the notices referred to the content of her upcoming autobiography as ‘defamatory and malicious’.
A ‘pre-action defamation protocol’ letter – addressed to Reham Khan by a law firm representing Ijaz Rehman, Wasim Akram, Zulfi Bukhari, and Anila Khawaja – reportedly claims that the manuscript of her autobiography contains a ‘litany of malicious, false, incorrect, highly misleading, callous, wanton, tortious, prejudicial, damaging, libelous and defamatory’ imputations against its clients. The letter adds, “our clients will be seeking full redress through the courts for the serious damage and harm.”
Khan’s upcoming book has been in news for several days now after a manuscript of the book got leaked online. This was followed by a concerted campaign by a host of PTI supporters and sympathisers including TV actor Hamza Ali Abbasi and former pop icon Salman Ahmed accusing the author of colluding with the Sharifs to malign the PTI chairman.
Speaking to a private TV channel on Monday, Reham Khan said, “I am being bullied but they have chosen the wrong woman to go after. I will not tolerate baseless allegations. I challenge the PTI to prove a single allegation against me,” she said, questioning the rationale behind the joint legal action by her former husband, former cricketer Wasim Akram and PTI chief’s political aides.
“Has (her ex-husband) Ijaz Rehman joined PTI? Why has PTI hired a lawyer for my ex-husband? Isn’t it strange that PTI has become a spokesperson for him?” she questioned.
Reham challenged the PTI to present proof to back up its allegation that she took £100,000 from PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif. “PTI’s allegation is just like another 35-punctures story, full of lies.”
Reham also denied the allegation (raised by PTI spokesperson Fawad Chaudhry) that she recently met PML-N leader Maryam Nawaz.
She said that she did not receive any legal notice from the PTI, but she had sent a legal notice to PTI leaders for defaming her.
Further, Reham maintained that her former husband Imran Khan did not fulfil requirements laid out for elected representatives in Articles 62 and 63 of the constitution, as he kept their marriage under the wraps for two months. She also criticised the PTI chairman over the recent controversy on the nomination of candidates for the caretaker chief minister slot in the Punjab. “How can a person run a country if he cannot give a name for the caretaker chief minister,” she questioned.
